In Ramadan the cooker works harder than in any other month: the oven for samboosa, four burners for soup and harees, all in the same hour before the call to prayer. A slightly weak flame or a clicking igniter can turn into a full breakdown at the worst moment, so it is better to catch it two weeks before.

Checks you can do yourself

  1. 1
Look at the flameA healthy flame is blue and steady. Yellow or orange tips and soot mean blocked ports or wrong air mix.
  2. 2
Try each burner on its ownNote any burner that is slow to light or needs a long click.
  3. 3
Check the burner capsThey must sit flat and straight, especially after cleaning.
  4. 4
Run the oven for 15 minutesIt should reach temperature and hold it without the flame going out.
  5. 5
Check the gas hoseLook for cracks, stiffness or sharp bends, and make sure the clips are tight.
  6. 6
Check the regulator and cylinderThe regulator sits firmly, with no hissing and no smell.
  7. 7
Try the knobs and oven doorKnobs turn smoothly and the door seal is intact.

Clean it before the month starts

Burnt grease around the burners and inside the oven blocks the ports and weakens the flame. Wash the burner heads and caps in warm soapy water and dry them completely before refitting. Wipe the oven floor and sides while it is cold.

When to call a cooker technician before Ramadan

  • A burner lights, then goes out when you release the knob
  • The oven doesn’t reach temperature or switches itself off
  • Any smell of gas, even faint
  • A yellow flame from a clean burner
  • Clicking with no flame on more than one burner

Book the check a week or two before the month, so if a part needs replacing the cooker is ready for the first iftar.

Questions people ask

When is the best time to service the cooker before Ramadan?

One to two weeks before the month, so there is time if a part is needed.

The flame is yellow. Is that dangerous?

A yellow flame means incomplete burning, usually from blocked ports or the wrong air mix. Clean the burner first, and if it stays yellow, call a technician.
