A gas oven relies on a few parts working together: ignition, the safety valve, the thermostat and the door seal. When one fails, the oven won’t light, lights then goes out, or burns food underneath while leaving it raw on top. These are the faults we see most in homes in Kuwait.
The most common gas oven faults
The oven won’t light
If there is a spark but no flame, the ports are usually blocked or the safety valve isn’t opening. No spark at all points to the spark plug or the ignition module.
It lights, then goes out after a few seconds
Usually the thermocouple, the safety sensor that cuts the gas when it doesn’t sense a flame. It is cleaned or replaced, and it is a technician’s job because it is part of the safety system.
It doesn’t reach or hold temperature
The thermostat controls the heat. When it fails, the oven runs either too cool or too hot. The technician measures the real temperature and compares it with the knob.
Food burns underneath
It can be the thermostat, a tray too close to the flame, or a torn door seal letting heat out at the top.
A smell of gas when the oven starts
A faint smell for a second while lighting can be normal. If it lasts, turn the oven off, close the valve and call straight away.
The door won’t close or the light is out
Hinges, the door seal and the oven bulb are usually replaced at home, and they affect both heat and safety.
